Step Up to the Mic - The Lyrical Lounge

Do you want your words to be heard? Then step up to the mic at Kinser Surfside’s Lyrical Lounge on Saturday, April 26 at 8 p.m. Don’t let your heart overload or your soul suppress, pour out your perspectives for others to absorb. Let the words roll from your tongue as you share your truths, convictions, ambitions, observations, and dreams. Wax philosophically or spit verse—whatever way is your way to portray yourself, do it.

The Lyrical Lounge has been steadily attracting more poets, lyricists, and other verbal artists over the years. To supplement this growing creative voice, MCCS Entertainment has added smooth jazz accompaniment by Yemaya, a local jazz group, for your listening and poetic pleasure. So, while you speak your words, the musical background will help pave the road to your
poetic bliss. Let the ambiance of this evening captivate you while you do the same for others. Whether you are deeply philosophical or relatively simple in your words, the stage will be yours.

The Lyrical Lounge is open to all ranks and services island-wide, but only adults ages 18 and up will be admitted. Performers’ stage time will be limited to five minutes. If you’d like to strut your poetic stuff, sign up with MCCS Entertainment by emailing mccsentertainment@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org no later than Thursday, April 24.

For more information, call MCCS Entertainment at 645-5821.

Spoken word and music with live jazz accompaniment by Yemaya.

Lily Festival on Ie Island

Have ever witnessed a sight so spectacular that you transcend time and space and lose yourself in that moment? The tropical island on which we live provides us with many of those opportunities, and only a ferry boat ride away lies another paradise—le Island. On Saturday, April 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., MCCS Tours+ will take you to that paradise.

Each year, le Island blooms a blanket of teppoyuri, or Easter lilies, during which locals celebrate the Yuri Matsuri (Lily Festival). “This is a famous festival that many people come from around Japan to see," says Heather Allen of Tours+. “People should not miss the chance to go see this festival while living right here on Okinawa.”

Board a ferry to le Island, and spend the day enjoying the awesome view at Lily Field Park, which is filled with more than a million of these lilies in full bloom. Also enjoy a variety of local entertainment, including drum shows, Japanese music, and Ryukyu dance.

There’s something for everyone to enjoy. "For children, there is the petting zoo," Allen says. “There will also be lots of good food and games. It is a terrific time to meet new people and experience one of the more famous festivals of Okinawa." Bring yen for food and spending money. Tour prices are $32 for adults, $18 for children ages 6 to 11, $11 for children ages 3 to 4, and $5 for children ages 2 and under.

Yomitan Pottery Village Tour

Immerse yourself in Okinawan art and culture on theYomitan Pottery Village Walking Tour on May 9 from 9 a.m. until noon. View pottery being fired, a mid-air glass blowing demonstration, and browse through the village’s several shops in search of a pottery or Ryukyu glass masterpiece at Yomitan’s Yachimun-
no-Sato, or the Village of the Potters.

Yachimun-no-Sato is a small community of pottery masters from throughout the island that live and create ceramic works of art together. This idyllic hamlet, renowned for its many artists and artisans, is located near the ruins of Zakimi Castle, a fortress from the Ryukyu Kingdom Era.

Not limited to pottery, Yachimun-no-Sato is also home to Seikichi lnamine—a master in the creation of blown glass art. Inamine-san is famous for his innovation. He experiments with different natural materials, fusing substances such as curry powder, coffee grounds, potters clay, and others into molten glass to extract spectacular colors.

This colony for artisans was originally built by the village authorities of Yomitan Village’s Kina district, which is the birthplace of Kinaware pottery and the location of one of the oldest kiln sites on Okinawa. Officials of Yomitan invited well-known potters from throughout the prefecture, including the late Jiro Kinjo of Tsuboya, the only local potter to have been designated a Living
National Treasure.

The Yomitan Village Walking Tour will depart from the Camp Foster Personal Services Center. Participants must register by May 2 (childcare may be available with earlyregistration). Bring yen for purchases.

culture corner: Sweet Reality

Tissue boxes, snacks, bentos (box lunches), cigarettes, beverages, toys—all are tangible proof that Japan’s pride lies in its living philosophy that presentation counts. Even bath products to “enhance a bather’s experience” range from the high-tech to the flat-out cute.

One example is the Cold Fusion Showerhead. This advanced showerhead is equipped with special temperature- sensitive LED lights that change color with blue for cool to icy and red for warm to hot. That way, owners don’t need to scald themselves when testing the water. And not only is this appliance temperature smart, it’s also powered by water pressure, thus eliminating the need for batteries.

La Patissier is another company that caters to the tub-lover’s needs. Upon first inspection, La Patissier products seem like any other fancy French bakery products, but upon closer inspection you’ll find these seemingly decadent treats aren’t made from pastry and frosting, but from bath foam and towels, giving a whole new meaning to the word “sponge cake.” From Swiss roll cakes to elegant mousse and parfaits, La Patissier’s creative packaging is the front-liner of the newest Japanese trend where people “bathe in food.” In a land where presentation makes all the difference, desserts aren’t just for eating; they’re for decorating cell phones, wearing as jewelry and on clothing, and for bathing and drying off.

Savon de Neige is another company famed for its bath-time creations. Savon de Neige’s specialty lies in its elaborate soaps made to look like simple home- baked treats like mini tarts, gingerbread men, donuts, Christmas and birthday cakes, chocolate truffles, and cupcakes.

The “Not Ice Cream Shop” is sure to catch the passerby’s attention more than any old neon sign of Baskin-Robbins. Even from the inside the place looks like any normal ice cream parlor with a vibrant assortment of frozen treats beckoning from behind the glass. Ironically enough, the delectable dairy desserts are not for eating but for bathing. The colorful menu offers a variety of original bath products: sherbet, gelato, whip, or salt sugar—all of which leave you lightly scented with the subtle and sweet aroma of milk and rose, strawberry, summer mikan (tangerine), peppermint, grape, lemon, or vanilla.

And this fake food for bathing isn’t just limited to sweets. Companies such as Bienfaits de Legumes and Bienfiats de Fruits sell towels made to look like watermelon, apples, peaches, cabbage, oranges, onions, and even, oddly enough, caulif lower. They even come in sets and are carefully packaged in produce boxes like their real counterparts. Going one step further, Bienfaits vendors are set up in a convincing imitation of a farmer’s vegetable stand.

From vegetable-inspired towels to the irresistibly adorable packaging of La Patissier’s “cakes:’ the dream of bathing in one’s favorite food has now become a sweet reality.

hey, mike: Fish-shaped banners (koinobori)

Recently I’ve noticed a large number of flags that look sort of like fish flying above many Japanese homes. What kind of fish are they? Do these fish carry any special significance to the Japanese people?

— Daryl Whitman

The fish-shaped banners that you saw are traditional flags called koinobori, which are quite common during this part of the year because of the holiday Kodomo-no-Hi or Children’s Day. Kodomo-no-Hi, which falls on May 5, was originally known as “Boy’s Day” (the holiday counterpart of Hina Matsuri, or Girl’s Day). Every year during this holiday, which is a part of the string of Japanese holidays called “Golden Week,” effigies of carp, (known as koi in Japanese) are raised because the fish represent courage and perseverance in the face of hardship. During ancient times, it was thought that flying these emblems would bring health and prosperity to sons, and the child would grow up to be strong and filled with resolve like the carp.

Many Japanese believe that the main reason koi are so special is because of an ancient Chinese legend about a carp. The folktale is about a hardy fish that overcame strong currents and completed a long, arduous journey upstream. After it conquered the many rapids and waterfalls of the Yellow River and made its final leap over the Dragon Gate at the river’s head, it was rewarded for its perseverance by being transformed into a dragon. The popularity of this folktale caused the fish to be a symbol of strength and success.

While dragon sightings are few and far between, carp are quite prevalent in the temperate and subtropical freshwater rivers of Asia and Europe. Koi grow up to three feet in length and are considered an important food source in Japan, so much so that it has long been praised as the “king of river fish,” and is considered an auspicious dish served at special occasions.

In addition to being a source of food, carp are also kept as ornamentation for gardens and as pets in Japan. These koi are specially bred for their coloration and size, and many are known as living gems. There are over 20 species of these finned jewels; the most popular is the Nishikigoi which are bright red, white, and black. Many species of koi are popular among fish aficionados and collectors throughout the world— sometimes being bought and sold for the equivalent of tens of thousands of dollars.

Because koi grow so large, they are often kept in artificial ponds—many of which decorate the gardens of the wealthy. These ponds, called ike, are usually as beautiful as they are elaborate. They are often over two feet deep, hold over 500 gallons of meticulously filtered water, are always equipped with an extensive plumbing system, and are landscaped with stone and small bridges for fish observation.

It goes without saying that keeping carp as pets can be a bit more expensive than a Siamese kitten or a Doberman. However, many consider the fish quite loveable, and neither dogs, nor cats are as instrumental in a national holiday. And, while there aren’t any professional baseball teams in Japan called the cats or dogs, there is a team called the Hiroshima Carp.

Jet still soars to rock's heights

Information and photo provided by Kluso

This weekend when you venture back out to the Gate 2 area, look up for the street side sign proclaiming the entrance to Live Music Bar Jet.

Pull open the classic tuck n’ roll covered doorway, watch your step up the short flight stairway and you will jump back in time to a dark and cozy classic 70s-style rock bar.

This is the home of JET. They are an Okinawa original. During the heady days of the Vietnam War era, rock music was heard 24 hours a day on American radio stations here. It was only a matter of time before local musicians created their own brand of rock n roll.

Thus, in 1969, high school friends Jimi, Etsu and Taki formed Okinawa's first indigenous American-style rock hand. They used the first letter of their names to create the band name. Playing near Kaclena and witnessing F—4 and F—105 fighters blasting through the Okinawan skies makes the name even catchier.

The band and the bar have managed to survive by consistently providing a great mix of classic rock tunes. Hits include mainstay rock bands such a Journey, Heart, Led Zeppelin, Doobie Brothers and Santana.

JET leader and bass player Taki is the only original member that remains. However, he is joined by Ko-chyan on drums, Eddie on lead guitar and Mimi on keyboard and vocals.

The bar is open Friday and Saturday, from 8:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. The bands start playing sets starting at 9 p.m. and rocks on till 1:45 a.m. Drink specials abound, there is always a good crowd and friendly mix of locals and Americans. Plus there’s no cover. Visit <http://jet-okinawa.com>.

Monument of shame

Story and photos by Keith T. Graff

Betrayal in love can have consequences that last a lifetime. In at least one case, however, the effects were literally monumental, serving as a timeless reminder to passersby.

On the northern outskirts of Nago City along the East China Sea is the little village of Genka. Turn right onto Highway 14 and cross over the island into Higashi Village and you will see a solitary monument near the crest of the ridge.

This little remembrance is marked by a lone sign. Many people will pass right by without paying it any mind. There isn’t much of a parking area and it doesn’t look well kept. However, there is a legend behind it that is as intriguing as its name - Hajiusui no to, or the monument of shame.

The most popular version of the legend rivals the tale of “Romeo and Juliet.” Like the Shakespeare version, a boy and a girl were in love but their families were dead set against any union. Unable to be apart, each night they sneaked out of their homes and met along the mountain path.

One night, the young woman did not appear. After a long wait, the young man thought she had spurned him and became very angry. He returned to his village where in a fit of jealous rage got drunk and made merry with other young ladies.

Later that same evening, his true love finally broke away from her home and ran to the rendezvous place. When she arrived and didn’t see him, she became concerned for his safety. She hurried down the path in great haste only to see him drunk and frolicking with some strange ladies! Feeling betrayed by the man she loved, she went back to their meeting spot and took her life.

The next morning, he felt bad about making such a rash decision and set out to see her. He found her lifeless body hanging in a tree. Realizing that he had played the fool, that his unfaithfulness was why she committed suicide, and to show his remorse, he built a monument to put his shame on display.

Cape Zanpa, a day of family fun

Story and photos by Keith T. Graff

Okinawa has an amazing number of places to go and things to do. Unfortunately, many of them require spending more than you might desire to spend without planning. Just eating out can be a bit prohibitive.

Cape Zanpa offers a great way to spend a pleasant day without spending a great deal of money. So if the weather is clear and sunny you should give it a try.

In addition to its close proximity to many base housing facilities, the area has a lot to offer. First, there is a nice sandy beach which is perfect for sunning and swimming. The light house and museum will also provide you some interesting views. The walking trails offer views of the East China Sea and spectacular sunsets.

The real treat for those with little ones is the interactive zoo.

The petting zoo is located out on the point at the entrance to the Zanpa “michi—no-eki” or rest area. It is home to a small flock of goats. some rabbits, a few chickens and a couple of turtles. For a small fee of 100 yen, children and adults can feed the animals.

In addition to the animals, children can climb onto an old sailing vessel or roam around in a large field. Bring along a picnic lunch and enjoy a few hours of family fun. Even if you forget the picnic basket there is a place to grab eats and snacks near the light house. There is plenty of parking but you will want to get there early before the beach goers grab the best spots.

Beware of the Killer trees

Photo and caption by William Stroud

Some animals kill their young but the Banyan tree kills other trees. Birds spread the seeds of its crimson colored cherry-like fruit to its victims. The banyan sprouts tendrils that wrap around the host tree to eventually take root in the ground. In time, it takes over and the host tree dies.
