Traveling etiquette

Story and photo by Keith T. Graff

If the weather allows you to get out of the house and see a little more of Okinawa, pack the tribe into the car. Wherever you go, there are a few things you should know from the start. Knowing where to stop can also make a journey memorable.

Driving can be a pleasure or a pain. Sooner or later, one of your passengers will either get hungry or have to use the rest facilities.

Convenience stores are easily found everywhere you go. It’s not uncommon to see more than one on opposite sides of the same intersection. But unlike in America, you shouldn’t just pop in to make a pit stop and go. In Japan, when you need to use the facilities, it is much appreciated if you make a purchase.

Another option for folks is to stop at a “Michi-no-eki” or road station. Virtually every town and village across the island has one. If you plan on traveling in Okinawa for any length of time, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with their locations.

Most Michi-no-eki’s are known for their cleanliness and spacious parking areas. You can also get a great deal on some cheap eats. Not only are the prices reasonable, often times the local cuisine is quite tasty.

Two stops to keep in mind along the Okinawa expressway is Nakagusuku village and Igei in Kin town. Look for the rest stops at Nakadomari in southern Onna village, Kyoda in southern Nago City, the Yui-Yui Kunigami located near the Okuma resort and Hiji Falls among others. The next time you go for a drive, look for the eki, but don’t get in a wreck!

Unlocking the spirits of rice: Secrets of making awamori

Story and photos by Reggie Cantu

A casual excursion through an Okinawan neighborhood can lead to new discoveries — including the time-honored tradition of making the potent local liquor known as “awamori.”

One day while strolling the hills of Chatan just north of the Camp Foster fire station I noticed a bank of gleaming stainless steel vats through the gaping doors of a nondescript building. Curious, I stepped inside. Yutaka Tamanaha, the comptroller, explained that I was in a "shuzosho,” or awamori distillery named Chatan Choro Shuzo.

About 600 years ago, a crafty traveler sailed from Thailand to Okinawa. He brought a batch of long-grain rice and the secrets of distilling that rice into what Tokyo University’s Kinichiro Sakaguchi declared to be “one of the best spirits in the world.” Sakaguchi is an authority in the field of zymurgy, the study of fermentation in brewing and distilling. Awamori is brewed much like beer except with rice.

The rice used in creating awamori is the indica genus of Thailand. Forty-seven distillers in the Ryukyus make awamori and they all have their own particular way of blending the final product. The proportions are kept as trade secrets and rely on the abilities of professional tasters to produce the desired formulas.

According to Tamanaha, the process in use is the same basic one discovered centuries ago. The rice is first washed and steamed in vats for at least 24 hours. It is then dried and kept at a constant warm temperature. It is then introduced to another interesting specimen, a black mold or “koji.” Black koji is also indigenous to Okinawa. As the koji permeates to the core of the heated rice, it creates enzymes which break down starch molecules into sugar, which can then be fermented.

After a day or two, water and yeast are added to the koji rice in other vats which are covered and left for a few weeks. The mash is known as “moromi.” Next comes the distillation where the moromi is heated and the water extracted. What remains is raw liquor. The new spirits are stored, initially in underground tanks to cool, then in the large steel tuns that first caught my eye. The awamori ages for at least three years before it is blended either with older spirits or water to reach the desired strength. Awamori, like most distilled liquor, mellows with age and the price rises.

Tamanaha’s brother, Hitoshi, is the master taster. He is in charge of creating the end product of the business, which has been in the same family and location for over a century.

I learned much about the liquid in those bottles I see in nearly every store from my little jaunt. Now I’m eager as a puppy when my much better half holds up the leash and asks, “Ready for a walk?”

Far northern vistas

Story and photos by Keith T. Graff

Almost everyone stationed on Okinawa eventually makes the weekend drive to the northern reaches of the Yanbaru region. For avid photographers and others keen on ogling gorgeous landscapes, however, this popular tourist destination offers even more than meets the eye.

For vista hounds who have yet to visit Cape Hedo, or Hedo Misaki as its sometimes called, it’s a must. On clear days you’ll appreciate the fantastic views of the islands beyond the rock formations and the cobalt blue ocean below. What many people don’t realize is that there are two other nearby spots which offer equally spectacular vistas.

One of these areas is the giant “Yanbaru Kuina" that can be seen from Cape Hedo. This is a three-story replica of the Okinawa rail, a bird native to Okinawa but currently in danger of becoming extinct. It is worth the short drive to see the replica and to enjoy the view, which offers a great backdrop of the cape and the surrounding islands for taking photographs of family and friends.

Be warned, however, getting there can be tricky. As you make your way back from Cape Hedo to the main highway along the access road, you’ll notice an odd angled intersection on your left. Turn left here but go slow because you’ll need to make another immediate left turn. This narrow road will take you down to the beach. Go past the parking area and make a right turn up another hill. Shortly after ascending, get ready for a sharp left turn up another short steep hill into a small parking area.

Most people, when leaving the Yanbaru Kuina area just get back on the main highway and drive down the west coast to save time or take the longer scenic drive down the east coast. However, if you go straight ahead and stay on the road for less than a kilometer, you will find one of the most scenic points on Okinawa. (You will know you have gone too far if you lose the center line on the pavement and start going down the hill.)

The name of the place is called Kayauchibanta, which when translated from the original Hogen means, “If you scatter straw to the winds it will scatter everywhere.” This is another outstanding scenic point that sits high on the cliffs above the East China Sea side. It overlooks the sleepy little village of Ginama.

If possible, I recommend visiting this spot early in the morning to avoid the sun in your face and to get the best photos. On a clear day, you can see all the way down the coast past Okuma recreation center and down to the Motobu Peninsula.

When you leave, I suggest adding one last adventure and continue on down this scenic and narrow mountain road to Ginama, the village below. Once, this road was old Highway 58 and the only road to Hedo Misaki and the village beyond that bears its name.

Beach strip serves up tasty culinary diversity

Story and photos by Reggie Cantú

There is much this beautiful island has to offer in the way of historical, cultural and the natural treasures. Then there are its not—so—obvious treasures: A stretch right off of Araha Beach where a rugged row of individualists have established eateries offering a cornucopia of tastes and atmospheres.

On this small piece of beach- front you can savor the rare flavors of Nepal at one end and get an exciting exuberance of reggae inspired Jamaican ambiance at the other. Tones of Santa Monica, Greenwich Village and India settle in between.

Each little bistro offers its own unique menu. At the south end. Narayan Prasad Joshi of Katmandu serves up the dishes of his native Nepal. “The difference in East Indian and Nepalese cooking is in the spicing and the use of oil,” he explained. Nepalese recipes are more subtle in the adding of spices. The curry dishes are easily appreciated even by those not normally fond of the tangy East Indian variety.

Entering Kastamandap, the only Nepalese restaurant on Okinawa, is to step into the exotic realm of the Himalayan kingdom. Hypnotic sounds of the sitar and the colorful decor create a believable illusion of having been whisked away to another land.

Next door is Seaside Jet City Burgers. The mood changes abruptly and a Californian surfer boy or girl would feel right at home. As the name implies, the house specializes in burgers, with the stacked-to-the-sky avocado burger being a local favorite. They have a full bar menu and the outside seating is perfect for the warm season.

Mr. lihoshi the owner and Mr. Higa the manager have put together a beach motif to make customers comfortable, taking full advantage of the informal island lifestyle. The staff provides service cheerily, making the Jet City experience fun as well as tasty.

Continuing north you will reach Daisy’s. The attitude is more like a Greenwich Village coffee house, mellower in tone. I am not saying Daisy’s is dull or boring. In fact, because of the wonderful menu, the place can get quite busy. The young entrepreneurs who run the place, Shuichi Kosaka and Akiko Imai, have come up with a creative bill of fare based mainly on a variety of fried rice.

A house specialty is the Energy Rice, which features sirloin cutlets, vegetables and a fried egg on a bed of garlic butter rice. Try the Kamakura Taco Rice with sautéed ground pork, green beans, peppers, pine nuts and Thai herbs on a bed of white rice and lettuce, topped off with onions and dried shrimp. Daisy’s outside tables make it a delightful place to watch a sunset.

Step next door over to Flex and suddenly you are in a Jamaican beach shack, jerk chicken. slow cooked for hours in a barrel grill, competes with the music and a full bar for your attention.

This is a party place, with reggae aficionado Chikashi “Tika” Egami presiding. Egami was enchanted by the Jamaican scene on a trip to the island and determined to re-create its atmosphere on this Okinawan beach. He has been very successful in bringing the flavor and boisterous joy of the Caribbean to this island. Flex is packed on the weekends with those who want to partake of that flavor and joy.

To find this dynamic little string of dining spots, go through the Highway 78 intersection on Highway 130 from Foster Gate 3, turn left at the light for a couple of blocks and look for the signs to Araha Beach and Chatan Park. Take the road just across the canal and turn left down the alley. Jet City’s pink flamingo signs are easy to spot at the turn.

You can also park your vehicle at the Araha Beach parking lot and walk a little to the north. Don’t be dismayed by the funky exteriors — you will do some good eating inside any one of them.

Jet still soars to rock's heights

Information and photo provided by Kluso

This weekend when you venture back out to the Gate 2 area, look up for the street side sign proclaiming the entrance to Live Music Bar Jet.

Pull open the classic tuck n’ roll covered doorway, watch your step up the short flight stairway and you will jump back in time to a dark and cozy classic 70s-style rock bar.

This is the home of JET. They are an Okinawa original. During the heady days of the Vietnam War era, rock music was heard 24 hours a day on American radio stations here. It was only a matter of time before local musicians created their own brand of rock n roll.

Thus, in 1969, high school friends Jimi, Etsu and Taki formed Okinawa's first indigenous American-style rock hand. They used the first letter of their names to create the band name. Playing near Kaclena and witnessing F—4 and F—105 fighters blasting through the Okinawan skies makes the name even catchier.

The band and the bar have managed to survive by consistently providing a great mix of classic rock tunes. Hits include mainstay rock bands such a Journey, Heart, Led Zeppelin, Doobie Brothers and Santana.

JET leader and bass player Taki is the only original member that remains. However, he is joined by Ko-chyan on drums, Eddie on lead guitar and Mimi on keyboard and vocals.

The bar is open Friday and Saturday, from 8:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. The bands start playing sets starting at 9 p.m. and rocks on till 1:45 a.m. Drink specials abound, there is always a good crowd and friendly mix of locals and Americans. Plus there’s no cover. Visit <http://jet-okinawa.com>.

Monument of shame

Story and photos by Keith T. Graff

Betrayal in love can have consequences that last a lifetime. In at least one case, however, the effects were literally monumental, serving as a timeless reminder to passersby.

On the northern outskirts of Nago City along the East China Sea is the little village of Genka. Turn right onto Highway 14 and cross over the island into Higashi Village and you will see a solitary monument near the crest of the ridge.

This little remembrance is marked by a lone sign. Many people will pass right by without paying it any mind. There isn’t much of a parking area and it doesn’t look well kept. However, there is a legend behind it that is as intriguing as its name - Hajiusui no to, or the monument of shame.

The most popular version of the legend rivals the tale of “Romeo and Juliet.” Like the Shakespeare version, a boy and a girl were in love but their families were dead set against any union. Unable to be apart, each night they sneaked out of their homes and met along the mountain path.

One night, the young woman did not appear. After a long wait, the young man thought she had spurned him and became very angry. He returned to his village where in a fit of jealous rage got drunk and made merry with other young ladies.

Later that same evening, his true love finally broke away from her home and ran to the rendezvous place. When she arrived and didn’t see him, she became concerned for his safety. She hurried down the path in great haste only to see him drunk and frolicking with some strange ladies! Feeling betrayed by the man she loved, she went back to their meeting spot and took her life.

The next morning, he felt bad about making such a rash decision and set out to see her. He found her lifeless body hanging in a tree. Realizing that he had played the fool, that his unfaithfulness was why she committed suicide, and to show his remorse, he built a monument to put his shame on display.
